Milan is home to two of the most extraordinary—and rare—wall paintings associated with Leonardo da Vinci: The Last Supper and the decoration of the Sala delle Asse at the Castello Sforzesco. Now, for a limited period, visitors have an exceptional opportunity to see the Sala delle Asse during the final phase of its restoration—and to do so from a viewpoint normally reserved for specialists.
From 7 February to 14 March 2026, Ad Artem (concessionaire of the educational services of Castello Sforzesco) offers a special programme of guided tours of the Sala delle Asse restoration site, with access to the scaffolding and a close-up look at the vault, lunettes and the celebrated Leonardo monochrome executed in charcoal.
The Sala delle Asse restoration site: a rare chance to see Leonardo at close range
Decorated in the late 15th century by Leonardo da Vinci and his workshop, the Sala delle Asse is one of the most fascinating Leonardo-related spaces in Milan. During this limited opening, participants can climb the scaffolding and observe details from just a short distance—an invaluable way to appreciate both the artistic technique and the complexity of conservation work.
The tours are led by Ad Artem’s specialist guides and delivered in collaboration with the conservators of SERES s.r.l., combining historical context with clear explanations of the restoration process: materials, working methods, conservation challenges and ongoing interventions.
A small-group guided tour (maximum 8 participants)
The experience begins with a brief introduction to Leonardo’s presence at the Sforza court and the historical significance of the Sala delle Asse within the Castello Sforzesco. The visit then continues with controlled access to the restoration area. Wearing a safety helmet, visitors—in groups of no more than 8 people—can remain on the scaffolding for approximately 30 minutes.
The small group format ensures both safety and a more comfortable viewing experience, allowing time to observe key areas and follow the guide’s explanations with ease.
